Dr. Kyeremeh Atuahene, the Director General of the Ghana AIDS Commission is a public health specialist with 28 years of proven experience in reproductive health programme design and management. He has a wealth of experience in strategic management and working with diverse stakeholders in advancing multi-sectoral response to HIV and AIDS. He has extensive experience working with development partners, private sector and civil society organisations, drawing on their diverse skills, expertise and knowledge to achieve programme results. In his 21-year career with the Ghana AIDS Commission, he exercised inclusive, engaging and decisive leadership to advance ambitious HIV and AIDS programme goals at the national and sub-national levels. He has demonstrable ability in collaborating with policy makers, programme managers and development partners to address complex problems at all levels of the health system and community system ranging from data collection, data use and service delivery.
He has rich experience in designing data collection tools, impact evaluation, research and evaluation methods including quantitative and qualitative methods. His leadership role in monitoring and evaluation has been pivotal in strengthening the national HIV and AIDS monitoring and evaluation system and expanding M&E capacity for HIV programme through the creation of M&E systems for NGOs and training hundreds of their staff in core M&E modules. He has co-led major national surveys and impact evaluation of the national HIV and AIDS programme.
Prior to his appointment as Director General in July 2018, he was the Director of Research, Monitoring and Evaluation of the Commission, a position he held for nearly 11 years. During this period, he served as principal investigator and co-investigator for many HIV related researches and co-authored 17 peer reviewed publications. He led a number of groundbreaking initiatives to strengthen the national HIV and AIDS monitoring and evaluation system. Prior to becoming a director, Dr Atuahene served as research coordinator for five years in Ghana AIDS Commission.
Dr Atuahene, has PhD in Public Heath from the University of Ghana. He is a Fellow of Fogarty Global Health Program of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA. He holds a Master’s degree in Applied Population Research from the University of Exeter, United Kingdom and a Bachelor of Arts degree (honours) in Sociology and Geography from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana.
